Electoral Commission (EC) Warns Electorates Against Machecki.Com Scam

Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has cautioned the general public against checking their eligibility to participate in the 2016 general elections using unauthenticated online applications. Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, Mr. Eric Kofi Dzakpasu issued the disclaimer in an interview with OnuaFM on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 As part of the processes towards a clean register, names of persons who registered as voters using the National Health Insurance (NHIS) cards were deleted from the national voters register per the Supreme Court ruling on the Garry Nimako, Abu Ramadan versus the Electoral Commission’s case. Since the deletion of NHIS registrants, local developers came up with an online app that supposedly allows one to check his/her status on the EC’s voter register online and to know whether he or she was affected. “Once you log on to the site, machecki.com, you are asked to enter your voters ID number or NHIS ID number, after which it verifies to t...

Ghana Election: Things Falling Apart Under Electoral Commission (EC) says New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is not well-prepared to organize this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections, but is only pretending to be ready for the polls, Martin Adjei Mensah-Kosah, Director of Elections for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said. According to him, events at the EC give credence to the party’s observation that the EC is “disorganised”. On Thursday, the proposed change of the election date from December 7 to the first Monday of November in an election year was shot down by parliament when the Constitutional Amendment Bill was rejected although the EC had indicated its preparedness to organise the polls in November. Prior to parliament’s rejection of the date change, the election management body was ordered by the Supreme Court of Ghana to take steps to delete names of persons who registered using the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card as proof of identification and allow them to re-register. An order the EC was forc...

Ghana Election: Voter Register Exhibition Exposes EC - Over Bogus NHIS List

Development and reports on the ongoing voter exhibition exercise appear to have vindicated groups and individuals who insisted that the list of 63, 000 persons presented by the Electoral Commission to the Supreme Court, as representing those who registered in 2012 with National Health Insurance Scheme cards, was bogus. The list was presented on the orders of the apex court of the land, which ordered the expulsion of the names of NHIS registrants from the register. Since the exhibition exercise began Monday, there have been countless reports of people whose names have been wrongfully deleted from the voters register and put among the category of registrants who used NHIS cards. The affected people have insisted they never used the cards to register. Many of the affected even say they are not subscribers of the NHIS and so could not be in possession of the cards. This has left many people convinced that the EC indeed conjured the list it presented to the Supreme Court as NHI...

Sport: England consider Hull City’s Bruce for coaching role

Image
Steve Bruce is definitely a runner in the race to be England football manager as several media outlets reported Tuesday the Hull handler had held talks with the Football Association. The 55-year-old Englishman – who like older compatriot and rival Sam Allardyce has yet to win any silverware during a long time in club management – said prior to the talks he thought the job should go to a homegrown talent. “I think the top of the FA in my opinion should be English. I’ve always said that, there’s nobody more patriotic than I am,” he told BBC Radio Humberside. “I’m honoured to be linked with it. It’s the pinnacle to go and manage your country. What bigger job in the world is there?” added Bruce, who has also managed among other clubs Wigan and Sunderland. Bruce, who enjoyed a successful playing career captaining Manchester United although he was never capped, and Sunderland boss Allardyce are thought to be on a four man short list also comprising young turk Bournemou...

Nigeria:ASUU rejects scrapping of post-UTME

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday protested against the decision of the Federal Government to scrap the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Warning that the scrapping “portends a serious danger for the quality of education in Nigeria, “the union also said the decision undermined the autonomy and powers of universities’ Senate as the highest policy-making body on academic matters, particularly admission of students and award of degrees. The ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who stated this in Abuja, added that the Federal Government did not consult the union on the matter. He said, “The cancellation of post-UTME to us portends a serious danger for the quality of education in this country. “The argument of Federal Government on the policy is unacceptable and potentially harmful to the future of Nigerian’s education system. We call on the government to rescind its decision and convene a genuine stakeholders ‘ meeting on the issue bef...

USA: Michelle Obama: Trump defends wife over plagiarism

Image
Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, appeared to take liberal inspiration from a 2008 speech by first lady Michelle Obama for her own address to the US Republican convention. The move drew fire from critics as the campaign of her husband, the presumptive US Republican Party presidential nominee, came to her defence early on Tuesday. The US media caught on after it became apparent the speech by Melania Trump shared key phrases with a speech by Obama at the 2008 Democratic Party national convention. It was when current President Barack Obama was officially nominated as the party’s candidate. Trump’s speech included the line: “from a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. “That your work is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. “That you treat people with respect,” Melania said in her speech. Political blog Talking Points Memo pointed out that this was very close to a part of Obama’s speech eight ye...

Nigeria:Police inspector rapes 15-year-old girl in Akwa Ibom state Nigeria

A police inspector attached to Mkpat Enin Police Division in Akwa Ibom State has allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl at gunpoint. The victim, a senior secondary pupil of Community Secondary School in the area, on Tuesday said she was returning from church on Thursday, last week, when a police team accosted her. She explained that the inspector pointed his gun at her, saying if she tried to stop him from touching her he would shoot her. She said the inspector then led her away from other members of the team to a dark portion of the road. The policeman then forcefully caressed her breasts, saying “small you possess these types of breasts”, she said. She added, “After he had forced me to remove my clothes, he ordered me to lie down and open my legs. And what I noticed was that he brought out his penis and inserted it into my vagina. “As he was romping over me, he forbade me crying as he threatened to shoot me if I should open my mouth. “But when I could not be...

U S Politic:Mike Pence just destroyed Trump’s chances of winning over Bernie Sanders voters

Image
Trump's choice of Pence, a Swiss-cheese Republican who evokes little emotion — positive or negative — as his running mate was clearly a play to appease an establishment base still in denial that a brash, anti-trade, anti-neocon, anti-kiss-the-Koch-Brothers'-ring reality star has taken over their regular order of pushing money around for the plutocrats. But Pence, who is governor of Indiana — a state Trump won handily during the primary, and will likely win in the general election — offers nothing to the lost-at-sea Sanders voter whose frustration with the status quo makes them open to Trump. "I was gonna vote for Trump if he picked a more moderate VP," Sanders supporter Shahid wrote on Facebook following the announcement of the Trump-Pence ticket on Saturday. "But now I'm all in for [Jill] Stein," the Green Party candidate for president. Another user wrote that the possibility ...

Melania Trump's Claims She Graduated From College Are About As Credible As Her Speech Last Night

Image
Melania Trump never earned a university degree in architecture ― she dropped out of college after her freshman year, according to her biographers.  Still, she claims to have a degree from “university in Slovenia.”  Questions about her education grew more significant Tuesday morning, following the revelation that Melania Trump plagiarized parts of her speech to the Republican National Convention from one that  First Lady Michelle Obama gave in 2008. That revelation on Monday raised the question of whether there was anything else Melania Trump hadn’t been entirely truthful about. Slovenian journalists Bojan Pozar and Igor Omerza wrote in their biography on the former fashion model that she “ became ― and remained ― a college dropout” after leaving  the University of Ljubljana’s architecture school  following her freshman year. Below is their account of this period of her life in the book, Melania Trump ― The Inside Story: From a Slovenian Commu...

Beijing: BeijingTo Close Access To Part Of South China Sea For Military Drills

Image
Beijing:  Beijing will close off access to part of the South China Sea for military drills, officials said Monday, after an international tribunal ruled against its sweeping claims in the waters. An area off the east coast of China's island province of Hainan will host military exercises from Tuesday to Thursday, China's maritime administration said on its website, adding that entrance was "prohibited". The area of sea identified is some distance from the Paracel islands and even further from the Spratlys, with both chains claimed by Beijing and several other neighbouring states. The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague last week ruled that there was no legal basis for Beijing's claims to much of the sea, embodied in a "nine-dash line" that dates from 1940s maps and stretches close to other countries' coasts.

Image
The Government of Ghana loses an amount of $1.5 million every month as a result of what is seen as the bogus contract entered into between the Ghana Water Company Limited and Messrs Befessa Ghana Ltd for the construction and operation of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant. Befesa Ghana Limited, an engineering firm, was contracted by government to build the desalination plant, operate it to defray its cost and hand over to the GWCL after 25years. Closely associated with the deal, which was signed by Kweku Botwe, then Managing Director of GWCL, include Goozie Tanoh, a leading member of the National Democratic Congress. Befessa Ghana Limited, operators of the plant whose construction was completed in February 2015, at a cost of $115 million, has over the last nine months supplied an average of 650,000m3 of water per month to the GWCL. Credible information available to the Daily Statesman indicates that the monthly financial obligation to the GWCL for the supply is $1.5 mil...

Prophet TB Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) is the “Second Jesus Christ”, Ghanaian boxer Ayitey Powers has said. The boxer, recounting his suffering until he was delivered of demonic possessions by the Nigerian prophet, told DJ Premier on Entertainment Capital on Accra100.5FM that he had gained faith in God after his deliverance. “I was not delivered by Prophet TB Joshua, but the God of Prophet TB Joshua. I have been a British-based Ghanaian boxer for a long time. I was in my room one day in London in the year 2007 and without any reason, grabbed my passport. I am an illiterate, I don’t know how to use the computer to do my bookings and to check flights online, but that day I got possessed, went to sit behind the computer and did my own booking and all the necessary flight arrangements online,” he recounted. “The authorities told me I would pay a penalty of 50 pounds for my ticket. I had almost 7,000 pounds in my account in London, but I had 70 pounds...

Nigerian Education: We’ll okay admissions after varsities’ screening — JAMB

Image
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has given condition for the 2016 admissions, saying it will only give approval “after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.” The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said this in a statement on Sunday. Ojerinde said, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board wishes to state that the latest list of candidates sent to all the tertiary institutions contains candidates who qualified for screening based on the individual institution’s capacity. It’s not in any way an admission list. “However, if this list is not sufficient for the need of any institution, such institution can source from the omnibus printout earlier sent to them by the board. The public and all tertiary institutions should note that admission will only be approved by the board after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions. “The list, which is made up of candidates, who met the national cut-off...

More than 100 nude women pose against Trump in US

Image
More than a hundred women stripped and posed naked with mirrors in Cleveland, answering a photographer’s call to blend art with politics and portray Donald Trump as unfit for the White House. They gathered on the eve of the Republican National Convention, where the brash New York billionaire will be anointed the party’s nominee for president after winning a raucous primary race despite alarm from the party establishment and the country at large about his divisiveness. “He is a loser,” photographer Spencer Tunick told AFP after the sunrise shoot in which 130 women took part. One hundred of them will be featured in the picture to be unveiled shortly before the November 8 election. The installation took place on private property in sight of the arena where the convention kicks off on Monday, the focus of multiple groups of protesters expected to take to the streets this week. The owner gave permission, said Tunick, and so while public nudity in Cleveland is illegal...

Ronaldo struck the winning spot-kick as Real claimed an 11th Champions League title, beating city rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties in May, before leading his country to Euro 2016 glory. Fellow Portugal and Real team-mate Pepe also features on the shortlist along with Wales star Bale, who steered his country to the semi-finals of the European Championship in their first appearance at a major finals since 1958. Ronaldo is favourite to the win the award for a second time, after scooping the honours in 2013-14, which would see him draw level with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann was also nominated after his six goals at Euro 2016 earned him the player of the tournament and the Golden Boot, only for France to fall short against Portugal in the final. Messi was one of two Barcelo...

Nigerian Bussiness:Tougher times for consumers as inflation hits 16.5%

The National Bureau of Statistics on Monday released the Consumer Price Index which measures inflation stating that the country’s inflation rate has risen from 15.6 per cent to 16.5 per cent in June. The 16.5 per cent increase in inflation rate represents one of the highest increases to be recorded by the country in recent times. The bureau attributed the rise in inflation to increase in prices of electricity, kerosene, furniture and furnishing materials, passenger transport by road, fuel and lubricants as well as transport equipment. The inflation rate had been experiencing an upward swing within the last seven months, a development which analysts have described as worrisome. The implication of the resurgence in inflation according to analysts is that consumers may experience more tougher times ahead owing to reduction in their purchasing power. The NBS said, “In June, the Consumer Price Index which measures inflation continued to record relatively strong incr...

Forces loyal to the Turkish government fought on Saturday to crush the remnants of a military coup attempt which crumbled after crowds answered  President Tayyip Erdogan's  call to take to the streets and dozens of rebels abandoned their tanks. Ninety people were killed, including many civilians after a faction of the armed forces tried to seize power using tanks and attack helicopters. Some strafed the headquarters of Turkish intelligence and parliament in the capital, Ankara, and others seized a major bridge in Istanbul. Erdogan appeared to accuse the coup plotters of trying to kill him and said he would purge the armed forces, which in the past have staged a number of successful coups, although not for more than 30 years. "They will pay a heavy price for this,"  he said.  "This uprising is a gift from God to us because this will be a reason to cleanse our army."  Later, the presidency warned on Twitter that another uprising could be staged at any time...

I am happy about it most especially because I have to impact on the society. I will touch lives and reach out to people. The thought of what I intend to achieve during my reign already excites me. But there are other more popular beauty pageants, why didn’t you go for them? The contest was done when I was free. I was running a diploma programme at the University of Lagos and when I finished my programme, that was the pageant that was about to hold and I had to go for it. And then again, this pageant has to do with Lagos State and I wanted to represent my state, Ekiti, in Lagos. I am glad I was part of it. Most people do not really allow their wards to contest in beauty pageants because they frown at the way  girls wear skimpy dresses like bikini, didn’t you mind exposing your body during the conte...
